MECA School of Music Improves Instrument Handling with Custom Lift Solution
Introduction
Double Pantograph Scissors Lift Safely Transports Pianos and Instruments Between Floors.
Project Challenge
MECA School of Music in Houston, Texas needed a safe and reliable way to transport musical equipment between floors of its facility. Through Autoquip dealer partner Cisco-Eagle, the school selected a custom Autoquip double pantograph scissor lift system designed to move a wide range of instruments—from smaller equipment and percussion instruments to large, valuable items such as pianos.
The lift provides a dependable vertical transportation solution while protecting both staff and instruments from the risks associated with manually moving heavy equipment up and down stairs.
Music schools regularly relocate instruments and equipment for performances, classroom setup, storage, and maintenance. Many of these items are large, awkward to maneuver, and highly valuable. Traditional methods of moving equipment between floors can create safety concerns for employees and increase the risk of costly damage to instruments.
MECA School of Music required a solution that would:
- Safely transport instruments between levels
- Accommodate loads ranging from small equipment to full-sized pianos
- Integrate into the building with minimal impact on available space
- Provide reliable operation with enhanced safety features for staff and students
- Support long-term durability in a busy educational environment
Our Solution
Autoquip supplied a custom double pantograph scissor lift featuring a 1,500-pound lifting capacity and a pit-mounted installation for seamless loading and unloading at floor level.
The double pantograph design provides the vertical travel needed to reach the upper floor while maintaining stability and smooth lifting performance. The system allows staff to safely move instruments and equipment without excessive physical strain or risk of damage.
The lift was engineered to work with customer-supplied landing gates and enclosures, creating a complete protected lifting area while maintaining safe access at each level.
Safety Features
Because the lift operates in an educational environment, safety was a key design consideration. The system includes:
- Two audible warning signals to alert nearby personnel during operation
- Two flashing red warning lights for increased visibility
- Upper travel limit switch
- Lower travel status limit switch
- Gate status monitoring through two cane bolt limit switches
- Two mountable pushbutton control stations, one at each level
- Solenoid interlock kits for customer-supplied landing gates
- Manual down valve located on the remote power unit for emergency lowering capability
These features help ensure safe operation while providing clear indication of lift status and gate position.

The Results
The completed lift system provides MECA School of Music with a practical and efficient method for transporting instruments between floors. By eliminating the need to manually move heavy equipment through stairways, the school has improved workplace safety while reducing the risk of damage to valuable musical instruments.
The pit-installed design creates a clean, integrated appearance within the facility while delivering the lifting performance required for daily operations.
