Custom Cleanroom VRC with Belt Driven Lifting System
Introduction
Autoquip engineered a custom vertical reciprocating conveyor (VRC) to transfer carts carrying sensitive materials between two cleanroom levels at Intel. Supplied through dealer Kone Inc., the mechanical cantilever lift combines a chainless belt-driven lifting system, stainless steel materials, and powder-coated components to address the application’s strict cleanroom requirements.
Dealer: Kone Inc.
End user: Intel
Model: FMC-315-0020 Mechanical Cantilever
Vertical travel: 315 inches
Project Challenge
Transferring Sensitive Materials Between Cleanroom Levels
Intel needed to move carts between two levels within a secured shaft equipped with downdraft filtered ventilation. Any particles generated by machinery could compromise the environment and the sensitive materials being transported. The lift therefore needed to provide 315 inches of vertical travel while meeting detailed specifications for cleanroom use.
Our Solution
A Chainless Lifting System for the Application
To address the project’s particle concerns, Autoquip designed a custom VRC that uses a lifting belt similar to those used in other elevator applications. The belt replaces the chain in the lifting mechanism, making the chainless design a central part of the solution for this environment.
Autoquip paired the belt-driven system with stainless steel materials and powder-coated components selected to meet the application’s requirements. The mechanical cantilever configuration accommodates the customer’s cart transfer needs within the secured, ventilated shaft.
Autoquip was selected because it could tailor its equipment to the project’s detailed specifications. Customizing the lifting mechanism, materials, and finishes allowed Autoquip to address the cleanroom requirements alongside the required travel and load transfer application.

The Results
The resulting FMC-315-0020 provides 315 inches of travel for transferring the customer’s carts between levels. Its belt-driven lifting mechanism and selected materials demonstrate how a custom VRC can support material handling in an environment where particle concerns shape equipment design.
