Integrating AS/RS and VRC Systems for Seamless Material Handling
The seamless integration of Automated Storage/Retrieval Systems (AS/RS) and Vertical Reciprocating Conveyors (VRCs) is transforming the dynamics of material handling, storage, and retrieval processes in today’s advanced manufacturing and warehousing sectors. Autoquip, the industry leader in material handling solutions, has been at the forefront of this transformation, showcasing our expertise in a recent project that seamlessly integrates these systems for enhanced efficiency and productivity.
The Integration Challenge
We were approached by a cutting-edge company specializing in automated liquid handling systems for the manufacturing vertical. They faced a significant challenge: improving their manufacturing workflow by integrating multiple systems for moving Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and pallets to their multi-story rack system. Various requirements, including platform size, configurations, footprint, controls, and speed, had to be considered. The customer needed a solution that addressed their need for speed and stability while managing a complex integration strategy that could promote seamless operations.
Our Innovative Solutions
The Autoquip team answered the challenge by engineering a customized 4-Post Mechanical Freight Lift specifically designed to carry AGVs. This VRC was selected for its stability and ability to minimize chain stretch under load. A stability wheel was added to the platform to enhance stability further. Ensuring that the lift remained stationary as AGVs rolled onto the carriage was imperative.
Incorporating dual-strand drag chain conveyors on the VRC platform facilitated the movement of AGVs and pallets. We also added conveyors at each shelf level to efficiently transfer products from the rack system onto the VRC.
System Integration Mastery
The key to the project’s success was the integration of the VRC lift into the customer’s legacy equipment network. This requirement was achieved through Autoquip’s in-house controls division, OSCO Controls. The OSCO team was pivotal in ensuring the VRC operated autonomously through network commands, communicating with the third-party vendor handling the inbound and outbound conveyors. This collaboration was crucial for the precise timing of pallet pickups and discharges, ensuring uninterrupted operations throughout the system.
Ultimate Material Handling Efficiency
The integration of the VRC with the AGV rack system illustrates material handling efficiency at its best. The VRC controls were in constant communication with the AGV controller, providing status updates of each drop zone and staging lane areas within the storage racks. This continuous flow of information allowed for the efficient movement of AGVs and pallets, optimizing the storage and retrieval processes.
A Winning Outcome
The success of the project demonstrates our deep knowledge of integrative systems and control technology. Our experience goes beyond designing and manufacturing lift equipment; our engineers and designers excel in creating solutions that combine various automated systems, resulting in integration optimization. This project met the customer’s unique needs while setting a new Autoquip benchmark in integrating AS/RS and VRC systems.
